Dearborn has 33 city commissions that study issues and provide ideas or make recommendations to the mayor, the City Council and administrative department heads on various topics.
The mayor appoints most of the commissions, some with the concurrence of the City Council. A few commissioners are appointed by the City Council only or elected by members of city employee unions.

Board of Canvassers: Administrative department: City Clerk; meets “as necessary,” within 14 days immediately following the election.
Board of Ethics: Administrative department: Corporation Counsel; meets quarterly during the year.
Board of Review: Administrative department: Department of Assessment; meets in the Council chambers on dates determined by the City Council or as otherwise required by law at times convenient to the general public. At least one evening session shall be held.
Board of Safety Engineers: Administrative department: Building & Safety; meets first Monday at 4 p.m. in council chambers.
